What is a medical brace?

A medical brace is prescribed medical equipment (durable medical equipment or DME) that supports and stabilizes part of your body as you undergo treatment for an injury or chronic condition. A medical brace can help ease pain, support recovery, improve mobility, and increase your independence.

Unlike the over-the-counter bandages and braces you can buy at a drugstore, medical braces are customized for each condition indicated.  They are the latest in technology, strong and durable to last several years.

When might I need a medical brace?

The Denver Sports Medicine and Spine team may recommend a medical brace as one aspect of your treatment plan when you have a musculoskeletal condition or injury.

For example, many patients wear a medical brace, participate in physical therapy, and have treatments like joint injections. This type of multipronged medical approach allows for maximum pain relief and the fastest recovery possible.

The most common areas to require medical bracing are the ankles, knees, elbows, and back. Some of the specific conditions that could require a medical brace during treatment include:

  • Arthritis
  • Spinal instability
  • Facet joint injuries
  • Sacroiliac (SI) joint dysfunction
  • Tendinitis
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Strains and sprains
  • Bursitis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Patellofemoral injuries and dysfunction
  • Dislocations/subluxations
  • Ligament tears
  • Ligament instability
  • Whiplash

Other conditions and injuries may also require a medical brace at some stage during your recovery. Many patients need a medical brace after a surgical procedure as well.

Medical braces can be helpful for injury prevention too. Many athletes wear medical braces to prevent them from experiencing reinjury after they recover.

What are medical braces made of?

There is a spectrum of medical braces, each with different materials and functions. In general, softer materials help provide compression and lighter support while harder materials, like rigid plastic or aluminum, help redistribute your weight so you’re not pressuring the healing area.

How long do I wear my medical brace?

The Denver Sports Medicine and Spine team provides detailed recommendations before you start wearing your brace. Be sure to wear your brace according to directions, as wearing it too long (or not long enough) can disrupt your recovery.

Medical braces provide excellent support and stability as you navigate recovery. To find out more about how to get a medical brace, call Denver Sports Medicine and Spine or click on the online booking feature now.
